Salt-water Systems on Above Ground Pools

When installing a pool, deciding between a traditional chlorine system and a saltwater system is crucial, especially for above ground pools. While saltwater pools are often praised for being gentler on the skin and eyes and reducing the need for direct chlorine handling, there are specific reasons why a salt system may not be the best choice for above ground pools.

Saltwater can be highly corrosive to the materials used in above ground pools. Even high-quality, resin-coated pools can experience corrosion over time Especially on the pool walls, and other metal fixtures, potentially leading to catastrophic failure. This corrosion risk is a particular concern for above ground pools, where structural components are more exposed to the elements compared to in-ground pools. Splash-over from the pool can lead to saltwater contacting the metal parts, including the metal top and bottom plates, further exacerbating corrosion.

For these reasons, McEwen Industries does not recommend salt systems for above ground pools. Despite our pools being of the highest quality and many being resin-coated, the potential for corrosion makes saltwater systems less suitable for above ground pools. Traditional chlorine systems, while requiring regular chemical additions, are often simpler to maintain and pose fewer risks for above ground setups.

By opting for traditional chlorine systems instead of chlorine generated from salt, pool owners can enjoy a safer, longer lasting, and more durable swimming experience.
